EU supports Azerbaijan’s Energy Strategy

The EU released over AZN 3 million to the Government of Azerbaijan to support its renewable energy and energy efficiency reform strategy. This is the second tranche of a dedicated Budget Support Programme with overall envelope of over AZN 14 million that was agreed upon between the EU and Azerbaijan. The objective is to develop a fully coherent, integrated and transparent energy strategy focusing on renewable energy sources and energy efficiency.

‘Renewable energy and energy efficiency are at the heart of any sustainable energy policy. This Budget Support Programme is an expression of our commitment to help Azerbaijan diversify its energy resources and to mitigate the effects of Climate Change, while bringing more revenues for Azerbaijan and creating jobs. As such, this programme is also a testimony of our joint contribution to the year 2012 which is declared by the UN as an international year of sustainable energy for all,’ said Ambassador Roland Kobia, Head of the EU Delegation.

The first payment within the Energy Budget Support Programme equal to more than AZN 3 million was made in 2010. Following the progress, in particular, establishment of a fully operational State Agency on Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources, the approbation of a Public Financial Management plan, and drafting of the legislation on the use of renewable energies and energy efficiency, the payment of an additional AZN 3 million was made. The next payment is agreed to be made by the end of 2012.
