CESD-FES International Conference on Evaluation and Modeling of Comparative Advantages in non-oil sector in Azerbaijan to Start in Baku

Azerbaijan’s strategic vision “2020: Look into the Future” identifies diversification of the economy as a key component of Azerbaijan’s economic development. In spite of the growth in the non-oil sector of the economy in recent years, the dominance of the oil sector persists. Oil revenue makes up 75% of total revenue of the national budget and half of GDP. Although the development of the non-oil sector in Azerbaijan has been prioritized before, it is hard to define which sub-sector(s) specifically should be supported by government, as there is neither unanimous opinion nor comprehensive research in this field. Although the concept “2020-outlook for the future” targets doubling Azerbaijan Gross Domestic Product within next eight years, this is impossible without identifying comparatively advantageous sectors to which investment should be directed. At the same time, as some prioritized areas, such as agriculture, are not profitable in comparison with others, it is hard to achieve considerable increase of non-oil sector.

Center for Economic and Social Development (CESD) Conference with support from Friedrich Ebert Stiftung holds International Conference to gather different stakeholders together in Baku, Azerbaijan on October, 24, 2013. The main objective of the conference is to define identify as well as to justify advantageous sectors in order to achieve appropriate diversification in the country’s economy. The expedient sub-sectors of non-oil sector are analyzed deeply within the framework of the research, and the final recommendation package is developed based on which sub-sector(s) present a comparative developmental advantage for Azerbaijan.
