Training for Local Civil Society Leaders on Understanding Civil Society and Setting Up of CSOs

Training for Local Civil Society Leaders on Understanding Civil Society and Setting Up of CSOs was taken place on June 05, 2013, Baku, Azerbaijan with participation of 26 representatives of different stakeholders mainly civil society organizations. The one ad half day workshop was taken place at the CESD Conference Hall.

Understanding Civil Society and Setting Up of CSOs was aimed to develop greater conceptual understanding of exactly what civil society is and what it does for the community; Also learn how to set up different forms of CSOs. This was a course bringing together the concepts and understanding of civil society strengthening, capacity building, and organisational development. The course method of working uses a mix of presentations for the theoretical framework (backed with hand-outs), and participatory exploration of issues through case studies. The course was combine group work, plenary discussions and feedback.

Outcomes: By the end of the course, participants were able to:

• Understand the historical evolution and current context of Civil Society Strengthening (CSS)
• Understand the differences and similarities between CSS, Capacity Building (CB) and Organisational Development (OD)
• Locate these concepts in their own organisations, and initiate programme design
• Understand value and power issues
• Appreciate good practice and principles
