CESD held Managing Staff and Volunteers in CSOs workshop in districts between July 24-August, 02, 2010. The workshops were aimed at helping CSO leader manage their most treasured resource. Volunteers and paid staff are vital to the success of Azerbaijan CSOs. The aim of this course is to help civil society leaders and local authorities develop a strategic approach to managing such a treasured resource and to develop and improve the management capabilities of CSO staff and development workers. During the course, participants will not only improve their management capabilities, but also gain an awareness of the impact of their management style, develop greater insight into their leadership role, and increase their confidence in being able to facilitate organisational change.

The method of working on the course was a structured, but facilitative process based on formal input, group exercises, case studies, discussion groups and clinics. The course provides an opportunity for development specialists to learn from each other, share experiences and explore common problems.

By the end of the course participants were able to: to develop an appreciation of current managerial thinking and assess the strategic trends facing CSOs; to assess the different approaches to capacity building and understand the management skills needed to handle increasingly difficult organisational problems in CSOs; to gain increased awareness of their management style, identify and strength their personal managerial competencies, and gain an understanding of how they manage impacts on others; to gain a greater understanding of the impact of culture on management styles and the dimensions of cross-cultural management; to improve their leadership capacities and appreciation of the role of development leaders in NGOs; to deepen their understanding of the capabilities and skills needed to leading and managing people as well as developing teams.
