Fueling
the Future? Assessing Russia's Role in Eurasia's
Energy Complex
27th-29th
October 2010, Aleksanteri Institute,University
of Helsinki,
Finland
Call For Papers
Russia is
an emerging energy giant. The country's energy
interests are
well established
in the EU, as well as gradually expanding in Asia.
As
a result, the
policy choices made within the context of the
country's
energy strategy
will have profound and possibly indelible
effects for
industrial and
individual consumers throughout Eurasia.
However, Russia is not only an exporting state.
The country acts as a
transit point for
Central Asian hydrocarbons bound for markets in
Ukraine.
Its energy majors are involved in value added
industries such as processing and
petrochemicals. Finally, Russia is a large
consumer of its own
hydrocarbons, possessing one of the most energy
intensive economies in the
world.
With the scope of
Russia's influence growing along much of the
energy
value chain
academics, policy makers and the private
sector are
left
with one basic
question: to what extent (or How) will Russia
impact the
economic
structure and political dimension of the
Eurasian energy sector?
In order to
address this fundamental question, the
Aleksanteri
Institute will be
hosting the 10th Aleksanteri Conference entitled
"Fuelling the
Future? Assessing Russia's Role in Eurasia's
Energy
Complex "from the
27th to 29th of October 2010 at Helsinki University.
Aims:
The need for a
conference dedicated to Russia's energy sector
is clear
judging upon the
tangible and theoretical challenges facing
researchers,
policy makers and business alike. From a purely
empirical
perspective, it
is apparent that major shifts in various
political,
economic and social
structures dependent
on Russia's increasing role in Eurasia's energy
trade are already underway.
Nevertheless, our
ability to understand what these various changes
imply may be
hampered by our own understanding of how the
energy trade
itself is
economically, politically and physically
structured.
The conference
will emphasize a multidisciplinary approach,
which will
greatly enrich
the discussion and bring forth new
interpretations of
the impact
Russia's evolving energy
industry will
have on both the EU and Asia.
Hence, conference
participation is open to a broad array of
international
scholars from the social and political
sciences,
cultural studies, the arts
and humanities, law
and economics.
Additionally, due to the obvious
economic and policy relevant components of the Conference's
theme members of the private and public
sectors are
also invited to
contribute in the panels, and in specific
roundtable discussions.
Themes:
* Coordination of
Interests in the Energy Sector: can't business,
institutions, and
society agree?
* Energy Industry
Specifics: exploring the structures that govern the
hydrocarbon, electricity, and alternative
industries.
* Energy Geography:
the Energy Trade from regional, state and local perspectives.
* The Strategic
Perspective: is there such a concept as energy
security?
* Breaking Icons:
New Approaches to the study of energy
policy

NOW ONLINE: Nomination Form for a Speaking Role
at the Informal Interactive Hearings of the
General Assembly with Non-governmental
organizations, Civil
society organizations and
the Private
sector, United
Nations, New York, 14-15 June 2010
2010 will be a critical year in
determining which development pathways our world
will pursue. In 2000, UN Member States agreed to
the Millennium
Declaration and
committed themselves to achieving the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs)
by 2015.
On 20-22 September 2010, the
General Assembly will hold, in New York, a
High-level Plenary Meeting, also referred to as
the "MDG Summit". The
Summit's main focus will be to build on what we
have learned during the past 10 years since the
adoption of the Millennium Declaration and how
to accelerate progress towards the
internationally agreed development goals, in
particular MDGs. The
Summit will
take stock of the successes, best practices,
lessons learned, obstacles and gaps related to
the MDGs and other development goals.
As a part of the process leading
to the Summit, the General
Assembly will also convene interactive informal
hearings with representatives of NGOs, civil
society and the private sector from 14-15 June.
The outcomes of these hearings will provide an
input to the preparatory process for the Summit
and be issued as an Assembly document.
A nomination process for speakers
at the hearings has now been opened so that
interested NGOs, civil society and the private
sector can nominate individuals to actively
participate at the event.
The application deadline is 16
April 2010.

form and for further information about these

The Sauvé Scholars
Program
The Sauvé Scholars Program exists
for young leaders (30 years old or
less) from across the globe who want
to change the world. The Scholars
are chosen above all on the basis of
criteria laid out by the Right
Honourable Jeanne
Sauvé:
Initiative
Motivation
Vision
Imagination
Demonstrated communication
skills
Awareness of international and
domestic issues
A strong desire to effect change
The Sauvé Scholars Program has
welcomed 87 Scholars from 44
different countries. Launched in
2003, the Sauvé Scholars Program has
evolved from the Jeanne Sauvé Youth
Foundation, created in 1991 by the
late Jeanne Sauvé, the first woman
to serve as Governor
General of Canada, the
country’s Head
of State and
Commander-in-Chief.
The Right Honourable Jeanne
Sauvé was a woman of strength and
vision. Throughout her distinguished
career as youth activist,
journalist, Minister
of the Crown, Speaker
of the House of Commons and
ultimately Governor General, she
remained at the forefront of the
most socially progressive issues of
her day, and was deeply committed to
advancing the role of young leaders.
In June 1991 Mme Sauvé explained how
the Jeanne Sauvé Youth Foundation
came into being and her goals in
establishing it:
Canadian Governors General have the
privilege when they leave office of
creating an institution which will
bear their name …. At the end of my
mandate, I decided that my
contribution would be to establish a
permanent international forum for
young leaders. No such institution
exists in the world and I strongly
believe that the young leaders of
the world have a pressing need to
get involved in issues which
confront their generation.
Each year, up to 14 remarkable young
leaders are invited to come to
Montreal for the academic calendar
year. They live together in a
beautifully restored mansion, enjoy
unlimited access to McGill
University’s academic
programs and other resources –
including lectures, conferences and
events suited to the advancement of
their individual professional and
intellectual goals – while
benefiting from the communal life
and multi-faceted exchanges with
their fellow Scholars.
The Sauvé experience, a period of
personal and professional growth, is
founded on:
Intense exchange of ideas and
experience, supported by communal
life
Extensive intellectual
freedom, allowing each
participant to develop according to
his or her needs and aspirations
Focus on action accompanied by a
clear commitment to the community
—including the host community
Commitment to dialogue among
cultures, which allows participants
to understand and assimilate
viewpoints built within multiple
frames of reference
